'Had' in this case only care about the moment of death.įor your friend to be correct, they would phrase it something to the effect of "if this creature ever had a +1/+1 counter". If it 'had' a counter on it as it died, it doesn't return. A counter can't be moved to the graveyard (meaning it's impossible to check if it 'has' a counter as it enters the GY, because it's impossible to enter the GY with a counter)*, so it checks what the state of the creature was as it left the battlefield. They use 'had' instead of 'has' because undying triggers as the creature as it's going into the graveyard. If you don't know what we're talking about, you can read up on formats here.
